  • Arithmetic: part of mathematics that involves the adding and multiplying, etc. of numbers (đại số)
  • A degree: a course of study at a college or university, or the qualification given to a student after he or she has completed his or her studies (bằng tốt nghiệp)
  • A diploma: a document given by a college or university to show that you have passed a particular exam or finished your studies (chứng chỉ)

Exams and qualifications ) 

  • To take / do / sit an exam: to have a test of a student’s knowledge or skill in a particular subject (đi thi, kiểm tra)
  • To resit an exam: to take it again because you did badly first time (thi lại)
  • To pass: to get the minimum grade or more (qua môn) / do well in an exam: to get a high grade (làm bài tốt)
  • To fail: you do not get the minimum grade (tạch, trượt)/ do badly in an exam: you fail, or don’t do as well as expected / as well as you wanted (làm bài không tốt)
  • To cram (for an exam): to try to learn a lot very quickly before an exam (học nhồi nhét)
  • Before an exam it’s a good idea to revise (to study again something you have already learned, in preparation for an exam: ôn thi) for it.  If you skip classes/lectures (deliberately miss classes: bùng học, trốn học), you’ll probably do badly in the exam.
  • To learn things by heart: learned in such a way that you can repeat it from memory (học thuộc lòng)
